Essays: Where does your inspiration come from?

SNEAKY MUSES

Muses are notoriously sneaky and often ideas come mysteriously.

My main muse is Nicole, my wife. From her I know true love happens and there's somebody special for everyone. All sorts of art have a sexual element and I think the need to create art has to do with our sexual programming. Not having sexual relationships between characters is often unrealistic.

The mystical muse gives me ideas I later see elsewhere. I can't believe all the claims of angels, miracles, ghosts, UFO's etc. are bunkum and I've experienced some myself. Science says most the mass of the universe is mysterious dark energy, most the rest is equally mysterious dark matter, parallel universes exist and time is an illusion. Anybody who says science has disproved the paranormal is talking rubbish!

The multiverse, is another muse. My biological knowledge is helpful when creating strange creatures. There is a paranormal realm and I'm convinced that Yeshua is the most credible guide to it. Therefore the Bible's another muse, partly because it includes prophecies, alluding to things like nuclear weapons and computers. Stupid religious beliefs also inspire because they give me something to attack.

I mostly write science fiction and fantasy stories, and stories need conflict. The evil and stupidity in the world inspire me because I like to attack evil things. I have plenty to choose from! I'm fed up with stereotypical villains. Ideologies I disagree with give me a good starting point when creating more credible ones.

I've gone through my whole life with most people acting like they felt I was an alien. I don't know why. I'm not sure they did. I guess this is the same reason muggles don't like witches and wizards. I've studied Myers-Briggs personality types and think people with the S factor tend to dislike people with the N factor.

I watch television and movies and read books and web comics, so sometimes I get ideas from these. I take the odd idea, twist it around and combine it with some other stuff. "Star Trek" good but it's been done but won't they have nanotechnology by the 23rd century? I'd like to write some great epic like "Babylon 5" or "Robotech" and I hope that's what my web comic will become.

Holy Grail is a strange muse. I have theories linking this to genetics. That's a good basis for many stories.
