The hazards of carcinogens

A carcinogen is any cancer causing agent. The hazards of carcinogens are assessed and reported by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). This federal agency organizes and analyzes the probability and possibility of harm that may occur when certain organisms are exposed to different levels of carcinogens.

Cancer causing potential as it pertains to humans is divided into 5 main categories:

1. carcinogenic
2. likely to be carcinogenic
3. potentially carcinogenic based on suggestive studies
4. Unable to determine
5. non-carcinogenic

The US EPA, as well as local state governments, continually examine the carcinogenic potential of thousands of toxic chemicals. Please visit www.epa.gov and enter "carcinogens" in the search tool to find more information about specific compounds or toxins.
