How to find a buyer for your used car

The first thing is to know honestly for yourself the reason why you are selling your car. Are you selling it because:

1. It has been a problem maintaining it being old and do not have time for it?

2. It's a good car but you want to buy a new one or another model or brand?

3. You need extra money?

3. Or, simply want to dispose of it for no reason?

Without knowing the true and real reason, you'll never narrow down your prospects on who would be interested to buy it.

You'll end up just like a used car dealer who is just in the business waiting for the right person. It will definitely cost you more advertising and making a sales campaign without determining your real reason or purpose. If you prepared your car to be sold for the most money you could make out of it, then do what the used car dealers do. That's the reason why they are in that business. They're making money.

If it is old, difficult and costly to maintain it means you are flexible when it comes to the price you want to sell it. As in one of my articles here, your selling price must be close to a price that you are willing to pay for that car, if you were the one buying it. Fair enough, right? If your car could be considered as a collector's item, then those would be the prospective buyers for the car. They would be interested to either restore it or probably a source of parts for the same models that they might have. Other than collector prospects, it will be difficult to sell the car which you, yourself, would not want to own anymore.

It's a good car so your price would be the same or a bit higher than those prevailing in the market. A good car is often appreciated by relatives, associates or friends. They would be the first ones that should know you're selling the car. They know you and the car so it will not be difficult to transact a deal with them. A good car and known brand will get many interested in it. If there are no takers from relatives and friends you could have it listed with a car exchange or used car dealer. A local newspaper or tabloid will be a cheap way to advertise and a for sale sign on the dashboard and rear windshield area will help very much.

For need of extra money or just simply want to dispose of the car, the same way could be followed as selling a good car. However, note that your selling price might not command as much as that of a good car. This is situation where you are willing to let go of the car to the best offer. The price you will be getting from it will depend on how well maintained the car is. A good example is my car I sold a year ago. It's a Ford 1980 model well maintained mechanically but really does need an overall paint job. This is the fastest sale I made as I have been selling my cars years back. This time I needed extra money. I sold it to a friend less 20% of the price I wanted for it. We bargained and haggled through email for a week. He was going to make my car as a source of engine and interior parts for the same model he was building up. The car's paint condition was of no importance to him.
