Downloadable game review: Plant This, by Blue Atom Games

Defend against waves of bugs sent by an evil gopher in Plant This! Strategically, place shooting sunflowers and missile launching daisies into complex mazes to protect against the incoming enemies. Kill the invading army before it reaches the bottom and takes a life.

Game play is fairly simple. Use the mouse to place flowers in any pattern desired. The only catch is the bugs cannot be completely blocked from reaching the bottom. Flowers shoot at the bugs, killing them and earning money for more flowers or upgrades. Target individual bugs or let the flowers decide. As the game progresses, more flowers become available and can used to replace existing ones.

The opening cinematic sequence is quite stunning leading to high hopes for the games graphics. However, when compared to the opening sequence, the graphics were a little bit of a let down. The flowers are nicely detailed and designed to imitate the real thing. Unfortunately, the upgrades only cause them to get bigger, not more detailed. Although, the gopher's mouth moved when the words appeared, it seemed to be put in as an afterthought.

The music was exactly as expected for this game. The background music and fighting sounds compliment the action on the screen. The gopher and tutorial explanation did not use words. There was a tutorial video available to watch. It was a bit disappointing, when no funny sound voice could be heard from the gopher.

The biggest disappointment with Plant This! had to be the gopher. From the opening sequence, this character had great potential. It fell short when making it to actual game play. The gopher added no real purpose expect to make a comment in text form. It takes a lot of time to readjust the maze after the initial placement. There was not simply enough starting money to make the maze suggested.

Plant This! does require problem-solving skills and the ability to plan ahead. There is an opportunity for improving math skills. The flowers and upgrades all cost money and the budget is set at the beginning. It is geared more for the child age group. Although, some boys maybe put off by shooting flowers. The bugs themselves may counteract this.

Overall, Plant This! is designed for easy play and is geared toward the younger crowd. Parents will like the skill development and opportunities for teaching that this game presents. It is worth considering, for problem-solving children. I rate this game a 3 out of 5.
