Budget-friendly hotels in Jamaica

In traveling, my husband and I continue to find that, if we put a little effort into it, we can find fabulous, individually-owned luxury lodging for less than many of the large chains like Beaches or Couples Resorts. There are sites, like vrbo.com (Vacation rentals by Owner) that can lead you to many small and upscale lodgings that don't break the bank.

Our trip to Negril was no exception. We actually found it on CheapCaribbean.com, and after nearly settling for a large resort, we stumbled upon Sunset at the Palms Resort. It had lower nightly rates and was all-inclusive like the others. The pictures looked great, too. Not yet set on a city in Jamaica, we thought Negril, being small and a bit less touristy, looked intriguing.

We flew into Montego Bay (the only option) and caught the bus to Negril, enjoying Red Stripe beer and conversation with other travelers along the way. The ride was about an hour, with one stop a at a little roadside restaurant. When we arrived at the resort, the pictures didn't do it justice. The staff was exceptionally accommodating and friendly, welcoming us with warm towels and cocktails.

Set across the street from the beach in lush trees and landscaping, the little "treehouse" cabins were breathtaking. It was amazing the second we set foot in the open-air lobby, with soft lighting and dark wood architecture. Inside, they were adorned in Balinese furnishings and decor. We couldn't believe what we got for the price. As for the all-inclusive part, if you want ten restaurants and night clubs within your resort, this may not be the place for you. Sunset at the Palms is a small, romantic, intimate place off the beaten path, but just a few steps from the beach. There are two great restaurants, a bar, a jacuzzi and two swimming pools. There is a beach-side cafe and bar, and because it's and the end of the major strip of beach, there's little traffic, so it's very private. Really, it offers everything a couple could want for a romantic getaway.

But, if you want to explore more of Negril (there isn't much besides the big resorts), then take the shuttle to Rick's by the Sea, where you can eat, drink, swim and dance in a beautiful place set on the edge of cliffs, and watch the famous local cliff-divers. Or, there are the big resorts along the beach with night-clubs and restaurants you can check out, by taking a cab or walking on the beach.

Not only is it affordable, Sunset at the Palms is beautiful, luxurious and even suitable for children. This resort is a great place to escape the norm and experience the exotic land of Jamaica.
