A guide to Cape Cod vacations in the spring

Although your typical tourist wouldn't usually plan a trip to Cape Cod in mid-April, you could be one of the special few who recognize the allure of visiting a normally tourist swamped destination in the off-season. Just because the weather may not be the warmest, there are still plenty of things to do in this beautiful East Coast region during the spring. Just grab a good sweatshirt and relish in the cheaper prices and smaller wait-times that comes along with this vacationing strategy.

April averages around a 45 degree temperature and is typically the month with the most amount of rainfall for the Cape Cod area. If you're visiting during this month, you may want to stick to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. Both islands tend to get the least amount of rain.

Martha's Vineyard:

Edgartown Harbor Light
One of the unique points of interest that sets Cape Cod apart from other beachfront locales is its historic lighthouses. Edgartown's scenic coast possesses the Edgartown Harbor Lighthouse. Even though the light that stands there now is the not the original, it is interesting to see an example of Massachusetts' tendency to move lighthouses from place to place as needed.

Gay Head Public Beach
Also called Moshup Beach, this beach is found at the end of a ten minute trail in Aquinnah. The beach leads up to the Gay Head Cliffs which are off limits, but still beautiful to look at. During the summer months, it costs around $15 a day to park at most public beaches. As a traveler seeking the sand in chillier months, you can avoid that fee altogether.

Belushi Pisano Gallery
This gallery not only boasts great contemporary art by local and national artists, but also a quaint little espresso bar that serves up Pawtucket, Rhode Island's "Nature's Harvest" coffee products. If you're looking for a taste of the East Coast, the atmosphere of this gallery could not be more perfect.

Nantucket:

Century House Bed and Breakfast
The Century House is the oldest functioning B&B in Nantucket and as such offers classic ambience with modern amenities in historic downtown. Depending on the size of room you choose, the prices range from $155 to $495 a night. If the wrap-around veranda and beach front breezes don't fill your senses, maybe the homemade cookies will.

The Boarding House and The Pearl Restaurant
Both owned by Seth and Angela Raynor, these two restaurants serve up different types of cuisine, but equally superb quality. The Boarding House Restaurant serves an eclectic cuisine made from mostly organic
