So I looked into my little dorm cupboard one bored, rainy, Wednesday afternoon. Fortunately, it didn't resemble Mother Hubbard's (okay, except for the top shelf, that was just full of containers and tinfoil), but I suddenly noticed that there was a marked absence of cakes.
Normally, this could easily be remedied by the knowledge that there was some gelato in the freezer, or some chocolate around somewhere.
But no. This was one of those afternoons, where all I wanted was a sugary, gooey, chocolate spongecake. Nothing fancy, just filling a need.
I spontaneously decided on a trip to the supermarket. As I found out later, a few other people in my family had made some spontaneous decisions as well at the same moment: a sibling suddenly turned up at my folks unannounced and stayed for 3 days, while the folks hot-tailed to the travel agent and booked another big trip on the spur of the moment. Hmm. Other people book trips. I buy cake.
After changing from pajamas and crazy hair to one of my regular cutesy late-50's emulations, I found the heel of one of my boots sitting on the carpet as I was about to leave. A trip to my shoe-repairer is now in order, which will be put off for a little while. I'm a regular there. Always breaking my shoe heels from running and jumping everywhere all over Melbourne.
So, anyway, the cake! I changed the first boot choice into a pair of cowgirl boots, and marched out the door. And then marched back in the door, as it was p*g down rain outside, and it was that sideways rain that I don't like very much. It always freezes one side of everything.
Grabbed a frilly yellow umbrella I got at the bazaar one time, and off out the door again.
I walked through the park, past a lot of students, nobody looked all that 'original' today though. I always like seeing people who have a slightly left-of-centre dress sense, it's a nice change from all the mainstream fashion. And finally, I got to the supermarket. It was actually an okay crowd for 5:30pm on a Wednesday. No queues or anything. I congratulate myself on some unintentionally good timing. And so, the cake. What should I get?
After heading past the bananas, (which were probably a better choice, considering I've just had some dental work done), I found myself in the cakes, bread, and chocolate aisle. But Betty Crocker felt like too much work today. I just wanted something quick, cheap, and easy.
So I casually sauntered back to the fresh bread section, where they keep all the cakes that the supermarket makes
