One-night-stand etiquette

The one night stand; we all know what it is and chances are, we have all had one at one point or another. Officially, a one night stand is considered a sexual encounter that happens once, usually with a stranger or somebody known for a short period of time. Furthermore, the one night stand does not develop into a romantic or even emotionally attached relationship between the two parties.

The most polite way one can approach a one night stand is with honesty. Let your potential partner know what you're looking for, but don't let it be your pick up line. If you can make your intentions clear through casual conversation; then even better. Try saying something like "I'm not looking for a relationship, but I would like to have some fun." Chances are that if the two of you retreat to some local low budget motel in the vicinity of the bar you just met at, it should be obvious that a one night stand is to follow, but just in case, a little clarification never hurts.

When the deed has been done, and the cigarettes have been smoked, nothing obligates either partner to further contact or conversation unless one of the two doesn't have their transportation near by. Dear readers, for the love of all that is good, please don't throw a wad of twenties at your one night stand and tell them to catch a cab when you're all done, you don't want to make them feel like a hooker. The least you can do is drive them back to their car. If one of the partners falls asleep, as will most likely happen, don't feel bad at sneaking out without waking up the other to say goodbye. If you are the type to feel guilty about walking out on a sleeping one night stand, but don't want the relationship to go further, try leaving a note that says something along the lines of, "thanks for everything" or "I had a great time, you're a beautiful person." That should be sufficient and general enough to convey your appreciation without committing you to anything. You don't have to leave any personal information like your phone number unless you want the sleeper to call you.

So, what if you make it through the evening and the two of you wake up next to each other? A meal is not required, but it is a generous thought. A home cooked meal is pretty romantic, but romance is what you're trying to avoid because romance leads to commitments. Commitment is not the goal of a one night stand, so try a Denny's or IHOP, don't leave the door open for the possibility of further romance. If you do decide to make a home cooked
