It is nearly impossible to compile a 'complete' list of vampire books. So many authors over the centuries have written stories and books that chronicle these creatures that to list them all would be a monumental feat. There is a way, however to bring to light some of the best of the best if you will.
"Dracula" by Bram Stoker is of course the father of the modern vampire genre. It is written in the nineteenth century vernacular, but in a way, that makes it more believable to the reader. The descriptions are vivid, and give the reader the feeling that he or she is actually seeing the story unfold from the eyes of the narrator. Couple that with the unique presentation, as from several diaries and letters, the reader feels the emotions, the terror that the characters would experience.
"The Vampire Chronicles" by Anne Rice have brought the early vampires into the twentieth and twenty first century. The descriptions of both people and places are powerfully written, and provide color to the sometimes tedious world of history. She writes the past as if she had lived it, and that makes all the difference. The books can be read by themselves, without the benefit of the others, but starting at the beginning of the series with "Interview with the Vampire" does bring more the the reader's understanding.
"The Dark-Hunter Series" by Sherrilyn Kenyon is a bright, imaginative take on the vampire, and has breathed new life into the genre. The characters are witty, powerful, and completely believable. Of course, there is romance, what vampire novel would be complete without it? But Kenyon also brings into play ancient gods, goddesses, demons and historic warriors from far off lands. These books are a new presentation of vampires as the heroes of humanity rather than its bane.
These are simply a few of the authors that have written vampire novels over the years, but they are some of the best. Of course, there are more authors out there that have superb novels and stories about vampires, however, I have not read them all. It would take as much time to read them all, as it would take to bring together a complete list.
But I'm working on it...
