Reflections: Death of a loved one

by Gena

Created on: August 12, 2008

I believe that God has a plan for each of us. Every situation we find ourselves in is for a specific reason and every person that we meet is never an accident. I met someone for the very first time in the second grade. We finished grade school together and went on to middle school together, went on to the same high school together and attended the same college. I can remember many many slumber parties and long nights on the telephone with her. After the college years we both found ourselves immersed in our new "grown-up" lives with work and relationships but we always kept in touch through the years even if it was a simple Christmas or birthday card or a quick call to just say hi, we made sure our friendship didn't fade. She was my Maid of Honor in my wedding just a few years ago and was there for the birth of my first child. My friend was truly a big part of my life and someone I will never forget. The stories and memories that we share are priceless and unforgettable. She helped to define the person I am today.

A little over two years ago she was diagnosed with cancer. She put up a good fight but unfortunately the cancer won. For two years the both of us prayed and prayed that everything would be okay but just a few months ago she was told there was nothing more that could be done. She took some time to let it sink in and she cried. Then she told me and we both cried. She didn't cry for long though, the strong person that she was she got herself together and started planning. She started planning for the inevitable which was her own funeral. I wasn't there the day she told her mom and her husband that they were going shopping for a funeral plot and casket but I know it wasn't how they had planned to spend their day. The only family my friend had was her mom and her husband and along with them a truckload of friends, including me. She was an only child and her father had passed away when we were in high school. Her husband's family was not very close and he too had lost his mother a few years back.

I never for one minute ever thought the day would come when I would have to see my friend in a casket dead at my age. I never once thought that I would be the first person that her husband would call after she passed and I never thought that I would have to see her being carried out lifeless from her home. I never thought I would be sharing in those final days of her life. But it happened and I was there up to the end. I saw her deteriorate before my eyes.

Her funeral
