How to paint one wall two colours

There are several methods that you can use to paint a wall and give it the two-coloured look. These are all easy to do and each method will give the entire room a totally different atmosphere. Here are some ideas that will give your wall and your room its own personality.

PAINT WITH SPONGES OR RAGS OR WITH A DESIGN ROLLER

These methods give the effect of wallpaper but with unique design of size and depth. Sponges and rags are done with the hands and although they can be somewhat messy, the design can be given more depth by applying more densely or with more or less pressure. The roller has a similar surface effect to the sponge but tends to give a more even distribution of colour.

Choose two colours and paint the wall by sponging, ragging or rolling one colour on top of the other. Make sure the first colour is dried before you add the second one.

Variations:
1: Select two shades of the same colour

Use the darker shade for the base and the lighter shade for the second coat or highlight, and the result will be a rich pronounced illumination of that colour that has a calming effect. This is great for a bedroom.

Use the lighter colour as the base and the darker colour as the second coat or highlight, and get a regal, distinct colour of sophistication. This is great for a sitting room, dining room or family room.

2: Select two different colours.

Choose two colours that compliment each other and you will have an inviting and calming atmosphere, as for a bedroom.

Choose two primary colours or colours that oppose each other and you will get a wall that presents action and character, as for a recreational room or playroom.

WAINSCOT THE WALL

Divide the wall by measuring a specific distance up from the floor all around the wall (or room) and draw a line using a ruler so it's straight.

Paint both sections with different colours.

Variations:
1. Select two shades of the same colour.

Use the darker shade on the bottom and the lighter shade on the top to add length to the room or hallway, and to allow for pictures to be prominently displayed on the lighter shade. This is great for the living and dining rooms, the den or the office.

Using the lighter shade on the bottom and the darker shade on the top will make the area look smaller and closed in.

2. Select two different colours.

Choose two colours that compliment each other for a well blended and inviting appearance with a calming effect. This is great for a bedroom.

Choose two colours that are primary or that oppose each other will give the appearance of action and excitement and is great for a child's playroom.

These methods will give depth, life and character to an otherwise plain wall.
