INSPIRATION'S FODDER
I began my writing career at the age of five when I insisted my mother teach me to write so I could send letters to my favorite uncle, a soldier in WWII. Among my memories of that time is the last post card I sent to him which was returned undelivered. At the age of 19, he was killed in the fighting somewhere in France. What started out as fun for me, my mom, and my uncle, became a tragedy with painful memories lingering until this day. However, even in tragedy we sometimes find the spark of a new beginning, and out of my own pain, I witnessed the growth of a love for writing that has been with me always thanks to my first inspiration, my uncle Vinny.
When the grieving process began to dissipate, I once again returned to writing. With my newfound fascination for the sounds of words that rhymed, mom and I wrote funny, usually quite silly little poems. Mom was my biggest inspiration. My penchant for "playing with words", which was my definition of writing at the time, was a handy tool throughout my school years. The closest I came to a writing career at that time was a little ghost writing I did for articles published in professional journals. My passion for writing, however, was set aside for many years as I embarked upon an extremely demanding professional career in the health field. Now that I am semi-retired, I find my former passion is still alive and burning hotter than ever.
The challenges I have had to deal with in my life, the people whose lives intersected my own, surviving devastating personal tragedies, and my work, provide boundless sources of inspiration for my writing. Just being alive you will have experienced the joys, the loves gained and lost, the funny moments, the embarrassing ones, the painful ones, yes, even the horrors which tear us apart; all of life's experiences are inspiration's fodder. Sit down at your keyboard, or pick up a pen and piece of paper, and stroll through your memories. The easiest ones to access are the emotion-filled memories, happy or sad, dealing with one of life's many challenges. Let others know about the pitfalls you encountered, the warning signs along the way, and how you broke through one of the roadblocks on the path of life. Write!
