Why Is Impeachment Such a Bad Word?
The word "impeach" seems as though it is a bad word, as it relates to President George Walker Bush and his administration.
According to the Concise Oxford English Dictionary, to impeach means, "(US) charge the holder of a public office with misconduct." In other words, the person is charged with a crime or crimes. At this point, the accused person is not found guilty. The impeachment stage of the proceedings is comparable to a citizen charged with a crime, but, is presumed innocent until or if guilt is found.
According to the constitution of the United State, no citizen is above the law. This is a nation governed by the rule of law. Early into President Bush's first term in office, the nation heard of alleged breaking of laws. More allegations of law breaking continued into President Bush's second term. Some of the many allegations are lies and cover-ups to start the war in Iraq; the outing of the name of Ambassador Joseph Wilson's wife, Mrs. Valerie Plame Wilson to the press; the firing of United States attorneys-at-law; tortures at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and tortures at Abu-Graib Prison in Iraq. All of the above took place under the sleepy eyes of the press.
While the press was cowardly asleep at the switch, it is very important to note that; to speak truth to power is neither conservative nor liberal, Republican or Democrat. It is an American way of life. In 2006, the nation awoke from its slumber and voted in the Democrats to take charge of both Houses of the United States Congress. The Democrats took charge of both Houses, partly because the nation was sick of the ongoing war in Iraq. The House of Representatives is charged with taking out Articles of Impeachment against public servants. The Speaker of the House, Ms. Nancy Pelosi decided that they would not seek to impeach the President.
There has been a cloud of suspicion over the White House since early into the Bush Administration's first term. This is a very secretive White House (most secretive since the Richard Nixon Administration) that does not care that the Congress by law is a co-equal branch of government and a check on the Executive. The Congress most be held accountable for not doing its job in investigating the Bush Administration, with intent to impeach. This democratic Congress treats President Bush as if he were king. The king can do no wrong; so, one should not be surprised when Ms. Pelosi and her colleagues turns a blind eye on this administration's alleged crimes.
