with spanish moss, this course will often treat players to the sight of alligators sunning in the open landing areas. With a 137 slope rating, this 6,871-yard course isn't exactly a stroll through the park, but is still considered totally playable.
The fifth, and perhaps the best known, of the courses on Kiawah Island, is Pete Dye's Ocean Course. Considered by many golfer's to be one of Dye's best works, the Ocean Course was featured in the film The Legend of Bagger Vance. Home of the 2007 Senior PGA, the Ocean Course will host the PGA Championship in 2012. With a somewhat daunting slope rating of 152, the figure-8-shaped course features ten holes running alongside the Atlantic coastline, with the other 8 running parallel. Set among the simple, natural beauty of the island's sand dunes, the pounding of the surf reminds players to glance up and enjoy the majesty of the nearby ocean. Because of it's exposed location and proximity to the ocean, this 7,296-yard course is a challenge for even an experienced golfer when the unpredictable sea breezes decide that they'd like to play, too. Be sure and take a shot at the course called by Golf Digest "America's Toughest Resort Course."
Regardless of your level of play, lovely Kiawah Island has something to offer for your next vacation. Whether you come for some lessons at the Tommy Cothbert Learning Center, or want to challenge the winds and sand of the Ocean Course, Kiawah Island will make your experience one to remember.
