One of the beautiful barrier islands protecting the coast of South Carolina, Kiawah Island is located just a few short miles from Charleston. Pines, palmettos, sweet gum, oaks and magnolia trees share the island with marshes and miles of hard-packed sand beaches. Home to abundant wildlife, the island also is a haven for golfers looking for some award-winning courses in one of the loveliest areas on the east coast of the United States.
Though relatively small, Kiawah Island is home to the Kiawah Island Golf Resort, which not only boasts five world-class golf courses that will make any golfer sit up and take note, but a state-of-the-art learning center, the Tommy Cothbert Golf Learning Center. Utilizing Turtle Point, a course designed by Jack Nicklaus, the center offers instructional programs ranging from group clinics to private lessons and is sure to interest golfer's of all levels of play. The newly renovated golf shop utilizes the latest technology to help you find the correct length, shaft and lie angle for your club. Be sure and check out the computerized swing analysis system while you're there, as well as the Explanar Teaching system. If the weather isn't cooperating during you visit to the Island, you'll be glad to know that you can use the seven covered hitting bays and the Astroturf putting surface until it clears.
But the Tommy Cothbert Golf Learning Center was not the only reason the Kiawah Island Golf Resort was voted the #2 Golf Resort in the U.S. by T+L Golf Magazine. In addition to the learning center at Turtle Point, golfers don't dare miss Osprey Point, Cougar Point, the River Course or, of course, the Ocean Course. Each of these fabulous courses offers different challenges and different thrills.
Given 4-1/2 stars by Golf Digest in 2004, Cougar Point allows players to take in the beauty of the Kiawah River while they play. Designed by Gary Player, the 7000-yard course borders a tidal marsh and has a slope rating of 134.
Tom Fazio designed both Osprey Point and the River Course at Kiawah Island Club. The River Course was the Club's first course when it opened in the mid-90's and garnered a place in Golf Digest's Top Five New Private Courses. The 7039-yard course fronts over a mile and a half of Kiawah River terrain. Fazio's second course, Osprey Point, is a testament to the designer's wish to utilize the natural beauty of the island. Featuring four natural lakes, saltwater marsh inlets and a forest of magnolia trees, pines and live oak trees draped
