Facing age discrimination in the workplace

When loss of employment factors for unjustifiable reasons, but reasons given in a conversation rather then a pink slip, falls under the government values of enforcing employment laws.

Recently, a woman who dedicated close to 20 years of employmen as a cook at the Hamden Connecticut Clelian Adult Day Care, was released from employment, verbally. The director of the Clelian Adult Day Care told her she is concerned about her "health". Factor this into the equation, the employee was on a short term medical leave to recover from a surgical procedure that was out-patient. Upon her return, she brought with her a note from her doctor stating she is in perfect condition to return to her duties at her place of employment.

During the time she was in recovery period, the Director of the Clelian Adult Day Care as her husband to fill in to cook for the elderly.

Then upon this woman's return, she was told her "health" was a concern and asked to volunteer rather then continue to be a paid employee. Meanwhile, the Director's husband is now a paid employee, which only questions how he is getting paid.

According to EEOC on line information, what happened to this woman was both age discrimination because she is in her 70's, and the ADA act, which includes short term medical leave for surgical procedures.

What do you do if something happens like this to you? The first step is file discimination papers, contact the EEOC and the office of the Attorney General.

No matter what age, everyone should be able to hold a job, whether it is part time or full time. When this woman asked for a pink slip, she in fact was told by the Director who handles this facility "They don't give out Pink Slips.".

Keep in mind, donation are made to this facility and no where did I find this facility is registered as a non-profit organization. But the again, if it was, every elderly person who attends there and every employee would be working for FREE. Second, how are they recording donations? Who is getting paid and who isn't? and why did the Director, who has only been there less then a decade, hire her own husband to replace a Certified Cook.

This most dis-appointing part of all of this is this facility us under the umbrella of the Sisters of Mount Sacred Heart. This woman, who was dismissed without valuable reason, has devoted her life to the nuns of Sacred Heart. However, although I love my Christianity, with everything that has happened in the clergy and has serviced in the media, it does not surprise me that
