Did you know Beavers make good Accountants? Not the pelt-skinned kind. The human kind. In Understanding the Value of Your Personality, Dr. Gary Smalley correlates 4 animals with personalities.

The "Beaver" has several qualities well-fitted to accountants. Qualities, such as being conscientious, accurate, and analytical, make the best accountants.

But how do you decide if Accounting is the career for you? And how do you get there?

For me, I knew thirty years ago in High School when I took my first accounting class. Now I'm an Enrolled Agent with a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting and over twenty years of experience. For some, it happens that way.

For others, it's a mystery to figure out. Therefore, I offer some guidelines to help.

First, Accountants deal mostly with numbers, so a love of math and working with numbers are necessary. Attention to detail is essential, as accuracy for Accountants is vital to ensure excellent work. Strong ethics is critical, as all accountants deal with confidentiality issues. If you're strong in these points, Accounting may be right for you. What now?

Preparation begins with solid education. Today, a plethora of educational opportunities abound. How do you choose? May I offer these suggestions?

First, if you are a "people" person, you may need the interaction of a classroom setting to learn best. Check out your local college for an Accounting Degree. This can provide the classroom atmosphere wherein you can thrive.

For those who need greater flexibility, less interaction with others, and work well unsupervised, online or distance learning options should be explored. These can allow you to work at your own pace and from almost any location or time of day.

Whichever avenue you choose for education, make sure the school is accredited and the governing board accepts the credits.

Along with education, get "hands-on" experience. I excelled with the "book knowledge". However, when I actually used it in the workplace, it came alive to me. I then understood Cost of Goods Sold and a Balance Sheet. These terms made sense as I applied what I learned. Pursue "hands-on" experience as you pursue education.

Also, consider specializing in a particular field of Accounting. This may require more education or internships. But the rewards may well be worth it.

You may also need to take Professional Exams as well. CPA exams are offered throughout the country, as is the IRS Special Enrollment Examination to become an Enrolled Agent. Check out all applicable requirements.

Preparation time can take several years, but the rewards are worth it, if Accounting is your fit. Earnings as an Accountant vary widely. Dependent on several factors, including education, location, full-time versus part-time status, and experience, salaries can range even up to six figures.

No matter what your earnings are, if Accounting fits you, job satisfaction and personal fulfillment are priceless treasures you will enjoy.

So, all you Beavers, get out your calculators, find your best educational option, and start your journey on the path to Accounting.
