Poetry: Returning to God

Rebellious, I journeyed on
As I turned my back on Him
It was an easy road I took
That fun, wide road of sin

Deceived by Satan's lies and wiles
I was not free but bound
But I was blind and stumbled on
For happiness I'd found.

"Return to me" God said, with love
I cared to listen not
I shoved aside all signs of love
My life with God forgot

God heard the prayers and saw the tears
Of blessed, loving friends
Of parents who suspected wrong
And prayed, and prayed again.

My God would not release His hand
He would not let me go
His light shone bright upon my back
And made my progress slow.

I turned around to warm my face
My road now bleak and cold
I saw the blinding love of God
'Twas awesome to behold.

It drove me prostrate at His feet
Struck dumb before His grace
"Arise, my child" He said with love
But Him I could not face.

I trembled, awed, before the throne
Of Him who sits above
And sobbed a broken, contrite heart
Overcome by His great love.

My feeble words can ne'er express
The peace that filled my soul
As God's forgiveness cleansed my heart
And wondrously made me whole.

The touch of God restored my life
As I returned to Him
And now that I am wholly His
Joy fills me to the brim

    The day I fell ill

    It forgot my friendship
    It forgot
