The role of the anti-hero versus the hero is much more effective to me. The hero must work with the laws of good in order to defeat evil. You would never see Spiderman or Superman do anything immoral to achieve their objective to thwart the powers of evil. That would make them no better than the villains. The heroes have to represent goo at all cost; would Batman ever use a gun? No, because the evil robber that killed his parents left him with a hatred of evil and he perceives guns to be evil because of that fact. The anti-hero, on the other hand, can use whatever means necessary to achieve the ends of defeating evil. Even if it means that they have to be a little evil themselves. It is the school of thought that says to fight fire with fire. With that said, let me discuss my favorite anti-heroes and why they are such favorites of mine.
First of all, of course my absolute favorite is Tyler Durden, of the movie, Fight Club! He represents the voice of the generation that was labeled as Generation X. Sure, technically he is an alter ego and not a real person, but he is what every man desires to be. His philosophy is in order to do anything, you must first lose everything. He creates an underground Fight Club in order to justify the rage that the lost generation feels about their lives in the United States. We are the middle children of history, no great war, no great depression; just the war within ourselves and the depression of our lives. Out of this arises Project Mayhem; a revolution of an underground crime ring that fights back against their oppression by doing "homework assignments." They break the law, and do all kinds of undesirable acts in order to fight the evil powers of the American Corporations. It all culminates into a master plan to destroy all of the major credit companies in order to erase the individual debt; which in turn would create total economic chaos, the collapse of modern civilization. In the end, he brings down the evil corporations but through evil acts that turn out to be heroic. An awesome film; if you have seen it, then you must put it on the top your must see list.
My next favorite anti-hero would have to be the character of, Happy Harry Hard-on, from the movie, Pump Up the Volume. In this movie, the anti-hero is a pirate underground DJ that broadcasts unregulated HAM radio waves with a vulgar show. Yes, he is in High school and a bit shy in public but the evils that he was fighting are very real, in the FCC and their regulation
