Short stories: Soul mates

I was recently separate from my husband and had move to Kentucky to live with my parents. My marriage to my childhood sweetheart was a nightmare to say the least. He was a marine when I married him and fresh from Beirut where he dug a friend out of the rubble dead. He started drinking a lot. He didn't become physically abusive until I had become pregnant with our first child. He had never wanted to be a father I suppose and pushed me down two flights of stairs when I was three months pregnant. I had shattered my ankle and needed surgery. The doctor had placed seven screws and a six inch metal plate in my ankle to fix it. Being eighteen and stupid I stayed with him. I dealt with a lot of abuse for five years. One month after the birth of my second daughter I left him. His mother left with me because she did not like what her son had become. My mother-in-law and I moved to Texas with her mother and step father. We lived there for a few months and then her step dad was making passes at me so I had to get out. I took the first job I had found and found me a cheap apartment and got the hell out.

My girl's father had been going thru rehab after we had left. I was killing myself working two jobs and going to school part time. He told me he would come and get the girls if I wanted him to so I could quit a job and try to slow down. I took him up on it because I did not want them to be welfare babies. I know most women are throwing a fit wanting to know how I could do such a thing. Because I am not a shallow woman who wants to use my children to hurt my ex. He may have been a terrible husband but he was always a good father. I then packed up and moved to Kentucky. I decided men were the last thing I wanted in my life. I went for three years without a man, yes that includes no sex. I was happy with my choice. My girls were doing well with their dad. He brought them to me every summer and had them enrolled in private school. They were happy and healthy and I got to see and talk to them.

My cousin came to my house one night and told me to dress up she was taking me drinking in a neighboring city which sat right outside a military base. The bar we went to my cousin was a regular at. She introduced me to several females but I hit it off with one in particular. I eventually moved in with her and basically became a hardcore partier who couldn't keep a job. A friend of hers moved back to Tennessee from Arizona and moved in with us to help with bills. She got me a job with
