I write from a Native American (Lakota) experience of Creator, Wakan Tanka, God. There is nowhere to turn where I do not see and experience God. When I awaken in the morning and first see and feel the sun, I acknowledge God. I take my tobacco outside and I listen for the voice of the Creator as I offer tobacco and prayers to the four directions asking to live in harmony within myself and with others.
God is in the rain that refreshes Ina Maka (Mother Earth), in the sun that warms us and in the winter winds. God is in the snow that covers the earth so she can replenish herself and bring forth her gifts in the spring and summer.
God is in the song of birds, the flight of eagles, the jumping of fish in the lake, the new ducklings swimming with their mothers. God is in the new buds that soon bring shade and in the new blades of grass.
God is in the embrace of those who love us and in the greetings of all whom we meet. God is in those we know and those who are strangers, those who speak to us and those who do not. God is in the Mississippi River which I cross every day between Minneapolis and St. Paul.
God is in my Green wing macaw, Apollo as he chatters to me, gives me unconditional love and companionship. God is in the smallest insects and the largest bear. God is in the deer that startle us as they dart across a road, a squirrel that can't decide to cross the street in front of us or not to cross, our companion dogs that love us unconditionally.
God is in the trees. Have you ever simply wrapped your arms around the trunk of a tree? You can feel the very God life within that tree: Oak, Maple, Birch, small, large, in town and in the country.
God is in our hearts, our minds, and our understandings. God is indeed everywhere. I feel for those who feel that the only place they can find God is in a building, a church. Sometimes I go into church and wonder why God doesn't seem to be there.
God is in the love we have for family members, friends, co-workers, elders, the sick, the poor, those in need, children. God is in the beat of the drum as our hearts beat to the rhythm of the drum, we become one with God.
God is in our work and our play, the times when we are serious and at times of laughter that fills the room. God knows no boundaries, no limitations, no time.
God is with us when we are wide-awake, deeply sleeping and in our dreams. God is in the spirits who sometimes whisper softly to us as we sleep.
Sometimes God is more present to us than at other times. Actually, this is just a perception since God is always present to us; we just have times when we aren't open to God's presence within and around us.
God is the only One who will not desert us if we doubt, or when fall off the path. When we are back in harmony, we will know that the Creator has walked with us throughout our troubles and will continue to be with us throughout eternity.
