Dealing with noisy neighbors

your preference for quiet. They may not care, either, but that's beside the point. Opening up a dialog with your neighbor is what is most important. Of course, you could also pursue the legal route. Calling the police on your neighbors may temporarily resolve the situation. However, besides creating an entry in the police blotter, you will also create resentment and risk incurring unwanted backlash. It's best to leave the cops out of the picture and try to solve the noise problem yourself, first. If you can't resolve it through peaceful negotiation, then consider the police, but only as the final option.

Another approach is to consider enlisting the support of other neighbors. It is very likely that others are unhappy about the situation, and may be willing to join you in your effort. This will help to build a strong neighborhood, which is a definite deterrent to disruptive behavior. It is just as likely that some neighbors won't want to get involved, either. In that case, you're pretty much on your own. Persistence leads to results, however, so stick to your guns and make your displeasure known.

Always remain clam when dealing with a noisy neighbor. Express your concerns clearly and with firmness. Don't waffle or be intimidated, and don't act as if you're bluffing. If you can engage them in reasonable dialog about the situation, fine. If not, it may be best to retreat until another time. Give them a day or two to contemplate your concerns and then try again.

Try to exchange ideas and explore the reasons for their behavior. They should understand you reasons for wanting to enjoy peace and quiet, as well. You may consider it your right to enjoy a peaceful morning, while they may consider it their right to do whatever they wish within the boundaries of their own property. Try to avoid creating an impasse by finding common ground and acceptable reasons for changing their behavior.

It is always advisable to cultivate a good neighbor relationship, instead of a confrontational neighbor relationship. Try to understand and accept your neighbor's lifestyle, and their reasons are for making offending noise. Create consideration, if not for you by your neighbors, then by you for them. With a little bit of persistence and good will, your noisy neighbors may just become good neighbors.
