Poetry: Heaven

by David Swyer

Created on: August 09, 2008   Last Updated: January 15, 2009

Most of my friends believe in heaven and hell.

We believe that there is a God pure and true

who put us on this earth so that we could

earn our way to be with him

at the end of our earthly journey.

To be worthy of that honor,

we need to purify our souls

by performing good and holy deeds

and by loving our neighbor.

But this path is not easy

because there is an opponent

who seeks to block our paths.

He is the wily chief

of the underworld who is our enemy and

who seeks to steal our souls.

He plans to capture us

and to throw us into his

cauldron of fire

where we would be unbearably tortured

until the end of time.

This cunning opponent

has no authority over our all powerful God.

But, he has our Lord's permission to test us

by his deceit and the lying ways.

If we can resist this terrible foe

by being true to our Lord's commandments

and laws, we will be rewarded

by being admitted to

our Holy God's heavenly kingdom

where we will thrive

in total happiness and that kind of

incredible love that only God can provide.
