Poetry: Letting go

For Walter, my father but not my dad

Hey stranger,
where you been?
Got me a loving family and a handsome
lover and a damn good education
all these things you've been missing
do you even care?
Out here in the mountains, got me lots of time to think
and I wonder are you part of who I am
or who I'm not
Is your absence as important
as I once thought it would be,
or am I stronger and better off
without you?
Got me a talent for writing and dancing,
friends who love me and people who
look up to me
can you say the same?
All this time you've been missing
do you ever wonder where I am,
what I'm doing, who I'm with?
My hate and anger have been replaced over the years
with a dull sort of ache
but every day I find more of myself
that's nothing like you
and that makes me happy, and that soothes my ache.
Hey stranger,
where you been?
Got me a beautiful woman in here,
and I don't need you
anyway
