A young woman in my office brought her last two puppies into the office with the hope of finding new homes for them. The global email went out to all employees advertising said pups and universally, everyone had to take a glance. I was one of the last to traipse into her office, steeling myself against all manner of puppy cuteness. Just having lost my dear Golden Retriever six months prior, I had settled in to a different routine, with our outside ranch dogs requiring less managed care than an inside dog.
The pups were in a tall cardboard box beside her desk. I entered her office with the outward appearance of discussing business, but admittedly, I love all young animals and little puppies were my biggest weakness. I'm known for my brusque professional manner, little did my colleagues know that I'm such a softy inside and couldn't wait to hold one of the pups. Completing my "supposed" business, I peeked inside the box. They were the tiniest puppies I had ever seen. The lone female was no bigger than the palm of my hand. She was sand colored with a black mask and an under-bite that made her appear to be perpetually pouting. Inquiring as to the breed, I was told that they were Chiweenies, or a Chihuahua/Dachshund cross. My co worker assured me that they were eight weeks old, ready to take home, and free. Bracing my backbone, I told her that they were adorable, but as I had recently remarried, I couldn't take one. I returned to my office, immediately answering the constantly ringing telephone.
Throughout the morning, my thoughts wandered back to the two puppies. Truth be told, I simply couldn't stop the inevitable. I dialed my colleague's extension without identifying myself, and simply said, "I want the female, I'll be right down." Literally running down the stairs, I rushed in, scooped the pup, and within three minutes she was safely nestled in my lap for the remainder of the day.
Joyous that I had another dog, I thought it best that I should drop the news on my husband. Coward that I was, rather than calling him, I sent him an email, a one liner that said "We have a new member of the household", knowing that he would call immediately. The response came in less than three minutes, my phone rang.
"Are you pregnant?" he asked.
Laughing, I replied, "Don't be ridiculous, you know how old I am. I'm bringing home a puppy. I hope you're not mad. She's a Chihuahua mix and shouldn't get over ten pounds. I guarantee your heart will melt when you see her. She's tiny so she
