Beware of mineral makeup containing bismuth oxychloride. While bismuth oxychloride is a mineral, it is a byproduct of lead and copper processing and can irritate skin.

When shopping for natural makeup, take care with the organic label. "Organic" and "All-natural" are terms that have no legal definition in the marketing of cosmetics and personal care products. Some makeup manufacturers get their products certified organic by the same agencies that certify organic foods, and to the same standards as organic foods. However, there is nothing to stop a company from calling its cosmetic products organic even if they are laden with artificial chemicals, pesticides and toxins. If a product is labeled organic, look for the seal of the certifying agency.

Be careful not to put too much trust in traditional makeup. Although it has been in use for centuries as a eye makeup, kohl (also known as kajal, surma or al-kahl) is a heavy metal salt, made from antimony or lead, and may cause lead poisoning. Remember: "traditional" does not always mean "safe." Arsenic was also a traditional skin cream once.
