Sean nervously played with the glass of iced tea wondering how to say this. It had been bothering him since he learned who Mandy's ex-husband was. He hated lying to her and he didn't care what anybody said omissions were lies.
"Something wrong, Sean?" Mandy said, tentatively touching his hand. He grasped it and lifted it to his lips kissing it as emotion welling inside him. He loved her so but this could ruin everything.
"You know I'm a terrible liar," he said bracingly.
She smiled indulgently. "It's not so much you're a terrible liar, Sean. You are simply incapable of it,"she said kindly.
He looked up at her frowning slightly. "Isn't that the same thing?"he asked bewildered.
"Hardly. Van lied just because he could. Didn't mean he was good at it. He may have thought he got away with it, and maybe he did since I never confronted him, but I knew he was lying. He hardly ever didn't lie to me. He couldn't be honest to save his life. I've had enough lies told to me to last me a lifetime and a half so don't think that I mind that you simply can't do it, Sean. It's rather refreshing, your honesty," she said smiling sweetly.
This just made him feel more guilty. He grimaced and put down the iced tea. Taking her other hand he shook his head sadly saying, "I did lie to you. I'm sorry but I didn't know if it would upset you. Please, forgive me. I don't want to ruin this but I might have already. I'm sorry."
She stared at him, a pained expression taking the place of her smile. She should have known it was too good to last. "Well, so much for learning from my mistakes. What did you lie about? Still in love with Debra? Have another girl lined up somewhere? You don't really love me?"
"No! Nothing like that. I mean, I do love you, more than you can imagine and I don't love Debra anymore and I never will again. I know that now. And another girl? Don't make me laugh! It took all my friends' consorted effort to get me to ask you out. You're the only one I've dated and I desperately want it to stay that way," he said vehemently. "It's about.... Van."
"What about him?" she asked warily.
"You say you knew when he lied to you. Does that mean you knew about his .... his indiscretions?"he asked tentatively.
She raised her eyebrows. "Of course. I just told you he was not proficient at lying," she said harshly. "Why? Did you know about them?"
"Some, yes," he said softly. "Being in the soccer league I got to hear all sorts of rumors, stupid gossip and, unfortunately, some of them were true."
"But you
