Going to the supermarket has become just as stressful as filling up your gas tank. Food prices have been steadily rising over the last year and we are all feeling it. However, with a little foresight you can save some major dollars at your local grocery store.
First you must be both mentally and physically prepared to shop before entering the store. If you are hungry and tired before you enter the store you're more likely to buy lots of things you don't need. Instead of looking at the bottom shelf, where things are less exspensive, you will pick things at eye level, and pay a premium price for it. Always make a shopping list and stick to it, having tunnel vision will help you avoid impulse buying. Running in the store for one or two items? Don't tempt yourself by pushing a big empty shopping cart or lugging a little shopping basket, carry your item to the register.
Try shopping at stores that offer Loyalty Cards. Sign up and cash in for instant savings on many products and additional savings on sale items. You may also be able to use your loyalty card for electronic coupons. Websites like www.Shortcuts.com lets you load coupons directly onto your loyalty card and eliminates the paper. There are also printable coupon websites such as www.Coupons.com and www.SmartSource.com that allow you to select the coupons you want. You can also usually find coupons for your favorite items by going to that brands website. Try to plan your menus in advance around the stores sales. This coupled with your coupons could save you quite a bit.
Lastly, shop the perimeter of the store before going down the aisles. A lot of the things we need are one the outskirts of the market like fruits and veggies, meat, and dairy. Load up on these, before making your way down the center aisles. If possible, try to shop alone. Kids and friends can influence buying choices. Go alone so that you can only have yourself to blame for over spending.
Following these tips will help you save money. Supermarkets spend a lot of money on marketing to entice us but with a little planning you can reduce stress and save money.
