Whether the Christian right wants to admit it or not, the majority of the country is becoming more liberal, including people inside the Republican Party. While people may not like the idea of allowing same-sex unions, Americans are becoming more accepting of it. Polls suggest that same-sex couples should be eligible for survivor benefits and for Medicare, and after precedence that was set by the California Supreme Court, over-turning the State law, banning same-sex unions, stating it as unconstitutional, I believe we could see these benefits instated under a Democratic Congress.
As President Bush winds down the last year in second term, national opinion of the Commander and Chief is continuing to deteriorate. As Senate and House races start to heat up heading toward the fall, I would imagine that Republicans will be cringing if they have President Bush coming to barnstorm in their riding. While Republicans are cringing, with the popularity of Barack Obama getting better every day, every Democrat in a tight race will be paying a dollar to have their picture taken with the Democratic nominee for President.
Political rhetoric aside, it seems to me that the left wing seems to be just happier by nature. Liberal people know how to have a good time, I'm not saying they're all a bunch of drunken party animals, but all you have to do is look at Hollywood, there always seems to a party here or there, just look at some of the movies coming out recently, or even some of the stars...now those are drunken party animals.
They also know how to poke fun at their gaffes, and are very good at poking fun at their opponents; the best examples being "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and "The Colbert Report". The Comedy Central duo at a first glance seem to be on opposite sides of the political spectrum, but if you get a chance, watch the two shows, you will see that Stephen Colbert is playing a character, a persona similar to Bill O'Riely from FOX News, but he really is still poking fun at the Republicans with outrageous claims, which are very common for O'Riely.
These are just some of the reasons that liberals are happier in 2008 than the Christian right. Don't get me wrong though, I know many conservative people who still are happy by nature, but from a political prospective, the left wing has been happier and has the potential to continue to be happy the entire year of 2008.
