What's the best medicine? It's exercise!

Throughout the years I've witnessed, as many others have, a myriad of diet plans and workouts. Testimony to the many among us who seek a better way of getting, or remaining, in physical condition.

I have fallen victim once or twice myself to the promise of an easier fix to my weight gain. I've kept in shape for most of my life, but I'm subject to put on a few extra pounds as much as anyone. I love sweets, especially after a good meal. A slice of pecan pie, a wedge of chocolate cake with coffee; so hard to resist.

I don't smoke, never have, and I drink alcohol moderately. I know it would be best for me if I drank no alcohol period, but there it is. So right away I have two downfalls that require attention.

Exercise is the ultimate answer. The human body is geared for motion; to deny it the right of movement is begging for trouble. Just ask someone who isn't active how they feel. Most likely they are tired most of the time. Uninspired, lethargic, no zest for life. There's nothing worse than the empty feeling that comes from inactivity. Being tired from a positive physical activity is a rewarding kind of tired. It feels good to know you have accomplished something.

This could include a nice walk, a bike ride, a jog, a session at the gym, whatever suits your needs and schedule. Healthy living is a lifestyle more so than a fad to be tried and cast aside in a short while. It should be a permanent part of our daily routine. We should be on "automatic" when it comes to exercising. Otherwise we are prone to make excuses, and let me tell you as one who knows, there are plenty to choose from.

Activity is also good for the mental well-being. Getting out, enjoying the sunshine in Spring, or taking in the colors of Fall will indeed lift the spirits. Even in Winter a fresh snowfall is a beautiful sight. In Summer the smell of fresh cut grass has always been a favorite of mine.

Finding something you enjoy is important. After all, if your daily exercise routine is something you look forward to, it eliminates the "have to" feeling that can rob you of a joyful and beneficial experience. Make it a positive part of your life so it becomes something you do not only for yourself, but for those who enjoy your company.
