The growing gap between rich and poor

by Jeanine

Created on: August 07, 2008

The world market economy is producing a rich west and poor, poverty stricken east. With capitalism as a success story in the west, this does not mean that the rest of the world will be able to deal with capitalism in such a positive way. The gap between the rich and the poor is only getting wider, and the exploitation of the poor areas of the world is only getting worse. The west made a success story out of capitalism only by exploiting other areas of the world. With this deficiency in the global market economy, it would remain impossible for poverty stricken areas to develop in a similar way to the west.

With the way that a successful global market economy is accomplished, it remains extremely difficult for the poorer countries to develop. In some areas of the world, capitalism may not be their answer to economic prosperity. Just because the west finds capitalism to be the answer to the economic challenge, other parts of the world remain to struggle with their development. It remains hard to look into a successful future, when we are living in a time of denial. Pushing capitalism onto these poor countries will not make capitalism successful there. Due to the fact that the west got rich off of their exploitation of local resources as well as resources from abroad, poorer countries are at a disadvantage because they have had their resources already exploited. With such a selfish society being produced, it remains evident that poverty stricken areas of the world will always remain behind the west, in terms of development.

The rich are getting richer, while the poor are only getting poorer. This gap is increasing in size in many developing countries. With the growth of this gap it can be seen that successful capitalism in the east may be more difficult and destructive than it was in the west. Different areas of the world contribute their own unique touch to the global market economy; therefore it remains evident that not all areas will develop into similar success stories. For example, poverty in Africa is a result of western exploitation and invasion, when the west opened up Africa to the world, it remains clear that their ways of living remain different. This difference in living standards, and life processes gives way to hopefully a new economic development strategy. The fact that capitalism has not had a good go in some countries should produce evidence that capitalism is not always the answer to economic growth. Although the west feels that capitalism is extraordinary and the answer, poverty stricken areas feel that capitalism is bad and that if they were to succumb to the desires of capitalism, they might be worse off.

Economic success is not inevitable; areas of the world will have to work hard in order to achieve economic prosperity. This means that capitalism may not be the answer for these areas of the world. Poverty stricken areas have suffered in order for the west to become successful. This exploitation is enough to make some areas incapable of continuing the capitalist trend. Therefore, economic success may not be able to be brought on strictly by capitalism. One day the world may discover a way in which a successful economic plan can be produced in some of the poorest areas of the world.
