If you want to have a natural makeover, you really need to know what goes into your makeup and beauty products, and be aware which cosmetics and beauty products could actually cause harm to your skin, or endanger your health.

Choosing good natural and organic options will make a big difference. You can look lovely, without having to worry about how your makeup is affecting your health.

~ Why some makeup and beauty products can cause you harm:

* Artificial ingredients in makeup are not compatible with our bodies. Cosmetics which contain talc, dye, preservatives and perfume can cause skin irritations or allergic reactions.

* Unless you use natural or organic brands, your makeup is likely to contain chemical-based perfumes and colorings, mineral oils and other nasty substances which can introduce toxic elements into the body.

* If you apply a greasy, oily or waxy product and it forms a layer on the skin, and this can block the pores, so toxins in the body can't be released naturally through the skin.

* Regular use of the wrong type of beauty products can lead to health problems, including headaches, dizziness, allergy rashes and skin irritation. Underarm deodorants containing chemicals preservatives, known as parabens, may lead to the development of tumors or breast cancer.

~ What to look for in cosmetics and beauty products which are safe to use:

* Organic makeup and body care products which are free from artificial perfume and mineral oils and do not use genetically modified ingredients.

* Beauty products made by companies that don't use any animal byproducts or animal testing.

* Skin care products which contain plant oils derived from nuts, seeds, herbs, flowers and vegetables. These can be safely absorbed into the deeper layers of the skin. They contain fatty acids which moisturize the skin naturally. Some of these natural oils will have soothing or healing properties, others will feed and revitalize the skin.

* Perfumes and fragrances made with natural essential oils and contain no alcohol. These can be wonderfully therapeutic as well as having a great natural scent. You can also buy essential oils and blend a few drops in a natural carrier oil, then use it an effective massage oil, or create your own individual fragrance.

* Makeup made from natural minerals does not need any further preservatives. Pure mineral cosmetics can safely form a light layer over the skin. A face mask containing natural minerals will draw out any impurities and leave the skin feeling cleaner tighter, more refreshed and less oily.

* Paraben-free moisturizers, cleansing gels, antiperspirants and deodorants, containing natural plant-based ingredients.

You should know exactly what is in the beauty products you use, especially those which you apply directly onto your skin, to make it feel softer, and anything designed to make you smell sweet and feel fresh.

Beauty does not have to come at a cost to your health and wellbeing. You can live a greener eco-friendly lifestyle, and look good too.
