Great ideas for weekend vacations

Weekend Vacation Jewel Mining\

Have you ever visited a city and realized you never knew your state had such a treasure? I did while interviewing for a job in Chelan Washington. I did not receive the job, but returned to Chelan when I had more time to enjoy. Afterwards I wondered what other cities I was missing. If you can answer yes, then you know there are many jewels unknown at present. One of the best weekend vacations is to mine for these jewels.

How to Start
You could make a list of all the places you would like to visit in the state, but I would not have placed Chelan on my list. I had known of a couple who planned all vacations by dart throwing. They threw a dart at a map and went to the location closest to the dart. A state map offers a weekend size version.

Planning
Planning starts with reading the map under the dart. Pull the dart out of the map and then beginning planning and not planning. The selection process provides the first planning need, directions.

The planning needs are minimal. Finding a hotel/motel room is the only location oriented planning required. Leaving the sleep quarters open could turn the weekend vacation into a nightmare if the town is having a festival, softball tournament or some other high hotel/motel demand event. You might hear of one of these and want to comeback, but not without a room.
Next, you plan a simple packing list. Keep the shoes comfortable, and the clothes causal, but nice and neat since you want to leave a good impression. Take a long one outfit you can dress up if the opportunity arises. Take along a few items to use while exploring such as a good book or maybe a simple kite. Definitely throw in a small notebook to write notes about the jewel. The main thing to pack is the open mind to let the weekend in unfold within its characteristics

Trip
The Friday after the trip or early morning on Saturday drive to the city, check into the motel/hotel, and then wander the city. Find a restaurant for your first meal. At the restaurant, ask the wait staff of any unusual shops or sites. Do not be surprised that he/she tells you that he heard this was interesting, but he never has been there. Frequently, we do not appreciate our own jewels. Weekend visitor wander, shop or find a park to sit and read your book. Watch the people and if they are open, strike up a conversation.

Enjoy the nature of a town that may not be on the tourist cycles. Who knows maybe individuals from the most common tourist traps might keep a getaway home in these least known town.
