Poetry: Fear of death

by Tierney O'Hara

Changes

I do not fear death
but I fear not living while I'm alive.
I do not want to just exist,
I want to grow and thrive.

I look at nature's flowers
from buds to blossoms dried
and wonder if the flowers
lived well before they died.

I think of my dog Manny
who died two weeks ago.
He died with grace and dignity
though no fear did he once show.

I learn from nature how to live
that life is temporary
that death is something we all face
and we need not find it scary.

Matter never goes away
it just changes in its form
and when we die, it ends a life
but another one is born.

So perhaps I'll be a flower
growing wild in southern France
or maybe I'll come back again
in music or in dance.

I might just be a sparrow
or a hawk that sails above
but I'll never need to fear death
if I live my life with love.
