This guide to buying a great anniversary gift is for every man who has an anniversary coming up, and like every year before, is not sure what to get.

It doesn't matter whether the gift is for your wife or your girl friend, whether you've been together six months or ten years, if you follow some basic rules, and dispel some of the myths, you'll feel much more confident about your selection.

1. Never, ever, forget your anniversary. Enough said.

2. Do not buy your partner a gift card. It's seen as the ultimate laziness, especially if the amount is too low, go too high, and it can be misconstrued as a payment for services, not good.

3. Know your partner. Turn off the television once in a while, and actually pay attention to what she's saying at home and out and about. Within her dialogue will be clear evidence of her likes and dislikes.

4. Spend the right amount. For an anniversary gift, the right amount is the most you can spend without going broke. The only exceptions are if you are really financially strapped in which case it seems irresponsible, or if your relationship is in the middle of a rough patch. In that case, spending too much is seen as begging, or even capitulation. If you are in the doghouse, pay special attention to the "never-fail" paragraph below. The basic rule though, is no less than $50, and up to $100 and beyond, depending on the kind of car you drive. Remember, over-spending can be taken as an insult, so beware.

5. Myth: Sexy gifts are the perfect gift. That depends on how long you've been in your relationship. Lingerie can be given in the first two to three years, but get the Victoria Secret variety as opposed to the cheap porn store kind, the tag will work wonders. Once you've hit ten or more years, if you think sexy is the way to go, you might try the sex toy route, but be careful, too kinky can turn her off.

6. The "Never Fail" gift pack consists of fresh flowers, at least a dozen roses, for the eyes and nose, the very best imported Belgian chocolate for taste and sensuality, plus champagne, wine or any other booze she likes, it can't hurt the festivities, and helps clear the mind and the runway.
