1998. The year when a pig tailed sexy school girl launched herself into global stardom at tender age of 15 years. Meet Britney Spears.

For such a young woman, she has had a colourful life, most of which has unfolded in the public eye. Although it is commonly speculated that her relationship with Federline was the trigger that set her off on her downward spiral, a highlight of which was when she shaved her hair, there is evidence that indicates that there may be more to the story.

Living some of the most challenging years in growing up in the spotlight, Britney seemed unaffected, with a chain of number one hits, a squeaky clean but sexy image and a relationship with her childhood buddy Justin Timberlake, she had it all. Where did it all go wrong?

Her break up with Justin sent shockwaves through gossip magazines, but people started to forget there was a real human being, a real girl, who was clearly traumatised through what appeared to be a difficult and emotional break up. Her pain was our entertainment - and so the downfall began.

Although Britney's image always had sex appeal, she began to take it to another level, shocking the world with her onstage Madonna kiss. Actions like this started to reveal a different side to Britney. Less than six months later she got married Las Vegas style, which was annulled just 55 hours later. It seemed to prompt a rebellious side to her which was then portrayed through her marriage the same year to Federline - the tattooed backup dancer - a stark contrast to her taste just a few years earlier.

They shortly had children but Britney started to demonstrate bizarre behaviour. Her appearance had changed from the toned and innocently sexy to the overweight smoker with bad skin. After spells of being in and out of rehab, in full view of the paparazzi, she walked into a salon and decided to shave her head.

Just shortly after she lost custody of her children.

A cry for help? A cry for attention? A mentally unstable individual who acts spontaneously, and thinks later? All of them are likely to be true but the thing that really stands out, is the feeling that maybe she just wanted to make a fresh start. Will she succeed? I certainly hope so. She has turned into a source of entertainment to a source for concern and we have seen her grow up in front of our very eyes. Let's hope she picks herself back up and stays famous for the right reasons.
