In many ways it can easy to see what you can change to save money. Carpooling or using public transit to save on gas, watching how much power and water to combat the rising prices of utilities. But it seems when it comes to the food bills a lot of people end up at a loss when they think of ways to cut their costs. Here are a few tips that may help;
1)Make a list.
You may want to keep a notepad on or near your refrigerator and write things down as you run out of the item or know you will need it. Having a list will make sure you don't have to make any last minute trips to the store and will cut down on buying impulse items.
2)Check your local fliers and compare prices.
Once you have a list you can see which stores have what you need at the best price. This will help you avoid spending more then you have to on items. An added bonus is that you can save time and money on gas if you plan out which stores you need to go to and avoid going somewhere that won't have what you need.
3)Use coupons.
Check your newspaper and stores for coupons. Take a few extra if they're for an item you buy often but don't be a coupon hog.
You can look on-line for coupons too. There are many websites devoted to helping people find coupons. Some manufactures also offer coupons on their websites. Most you'll have to print the coupons yourself but there are a few that you pick the coupons you want and they mail them to you.
4)Don't be afraid to buy store brand products.
In most cases a store brand version of a product costs less and there is no difference in product quality.
5)The discount or clearance racks can be your friend.
Items can be discounted for various reasons. The store could have overstock, the packaging could have changed so they're getting rid of older stock, minor damage to packaging, or the product is close to the expiration date.
It's worth checking to save you some money.
6)Buy in bulk.
If there is a product you use a lot of then it may be worth it to buy in bulk. You'll save trips to the store and money. Just check the price and make sure you're getting a deal.
7)Make a budget.
Perhaps I'm saving the most important tip for last. Make a budget and live within it. A lot of people don't really know how much they have to spend on groceries and it causes them to spend more then they should. Once you have your budget you're more likely to see how you can save on your purchases.
Hopefully some or all of these tips have been helpful in showing you how to save some money on your next trip to the grocery store. Good luck and happy shopping!
