How to know when it is time to put a dog to sleep

A dog in the home is more than a pet. He/she is a confidant, a companion, and a member of the family. "When should a dog be put to sleep?", is a question that most dog owners never want to answer. Though it may be difficult, it is important to know when it is appropriate for both the wellbeing of the owner and the dog.

First, let's get something out of the way. A dangerous dog is a dangerous dog. This may be one of the easier points to swallow. In almost every state the owner is responsible for the damages and actions of his animals (hence leash laws, etc..). If you can not control your dog and he is violent, it is in your best interest as well as your communities best interest to either seek a professional trainer or put the dog to sleep. I know we can all feel the hurt when an animal takes a child from it's mother. Don't let your dog be the reason you're in jail. A violent dog is not a pet as much as it is a menace. Several states require a dog be put to sleep if it bites someone once. Your vet and/or a trainer can give you advice if you aren't sure if your dog is too violent, or if he/she is just roughhousing.

Now, there is the other side to the story. When do you put down a "good dog"? This is not something any owner I'd imagine would take lightly. Most owners love their pets more than the pets love themselves. The fact is you need to make a rational judgment about the following question: Will putting my dog to sleep be more humane than keeping him/her alive? Or, Is my dog suffering? Most people already know the answer to this before they ask it, but you should spend some time with a vet and ask the questions you really want answers to:

1. Is my dog in pain? If so, is there anything I can do?
2. Will my dog's condition get better or worse?
3. What do you recommend as a professional?

The answers to these questions should give you a good idea on what you should do.

Remember, all decisions regarding your dog's health can ONLY be accurately assessed by a professional. And keeping a logical and compassionate mind about the choice could mean the difference between a painful death and a humane death. If your animal is violent, it could be the difference between life and death for a neighbors child. Be educated, prepared and strong!

Your dog is an important member of the family and should be treated with the dignity and respect all living things deserve. Knowing when to make the right decision can make a world of difference to a dog, and your family.
