Bubblicious-pop has become a well-known form of music due to artists like Rihanna, The Jonas Brothers, and Gwen Stefani, but bubblicious-jazz is relatively new to most music fans. Like its pop counterpart, it's a buoyant fusion of funk, dance, R&B/pop, and soul but with the added ingredient of smooth jazz. One of its forerunners does not even know that he is making it, but his songs are brimming with it. Saxophonist Paul "Shilts" Weimar, who is usually recognized as the saxophone player for the British pop-funk-jazz outfit, Down To The Bone, has steadily forged a solo path for himself, and with each new album he has brought forth a stronger brew of bubblicious-jazz.
Weimar, who acquired his moniker "Shilts" from friends, informs that "The nickname Shilts' came about over a game of soccer in England, so has little to do with my music, however, the circumstances under which I acquired it suit my personality though."
Since releasing his debut album, "See What Happens" in 2001, followed by his CD, "HeadBoppin'" in 2003, Shilts has been virtually unstoppable between recording new material, touring, and collaborating with other musicians. Since opening his home recording studio, his occupancy has become a musician magnet. He tells JazzReview.com about this collaboration with trumpeter Rick Braun and saxophonist Richard Elliot, "I have just co-written a track for "R N R," the new Rick Braun, Richard Elliot CD. The track is called "Q It Up" and turned out smashing. I write all the time and have a good catalogue of tunes. I'm open to share with anyone but I don't have regular clients."
Shilts was born in England and acquired his fame there as a member of the 80s pop band, Breath, and then later in the 90s as a member of Down To The Bone. But he relocated his family to the US in order to pursue his solo projects, and he is particularly gleeful about the release of his new solo album, "Jigsaw Life," which he spent all of March in 2008 to record in order to have it ready for NuGroove Records to release in July 2008.
He tells, "I wanted to do a follow up to my last album, "HeadBoppin" as I thought it was about time. I was also making a final break from Down To The Bone, so this was an ideal opportunity. I get influenced by things all the time when it comes to music and not always from musical things or situations."
He started off January 2008, performing as a solo artist for the concerts on the All Star Smooth Cruise.
