Colostomy is mainly introduced to cope up with the aftermath of a colorectal cancer in a patient.
This is used to fulfill the nedds especially after a surgeon has undergone a colon cancer operation where a part of the colon or rectum are removed from a patient's bowel due to malignant tumor .
The affected part of the colon or rectum are removed and the other two ends are sutured and this takes time for the sutured ends to heal and so an opening is made in the rib age area and a colostomy is fixed directly from the rectum for the waste materials ( stool) to go in.
Colostomy can be either permanent or temporary depending upon the surgery and the area affected. if a major portion of the colon or rectum is removed then colostomy will be permanent.
It will be a discomfort for 2 - 3 weeks after the colostomy has been fixed after the surgery. In most cases this can be taken care by the usage of drugs and medication too.
It is of vital importance to take care to see to that after the colostomy (bag) is fixed to keep it clean and neat to prevent infections. usually after the operation a colostomy pouch or bag is attached to the side of the abdomen to collect the excreta .
Most cases the doctors will give a class to the patients of how to take care of the colostomy pouch and how to trace and prevent out infections that can arise out after this operation.
A colostomy is an artificial outlet or incision in to the large intestine to the outside of the abdomen. It can in other words be compared to a substitute anus which acts as a opening to collect excreta until the operated portion of the colon gets recouped and is in proper functioning way.
A colostomy is usually needed when the large intestine and the rectum are affected with cancer and where a portion fo these has to be removes due to surgery and then sutured after the removal of the affected ends.
So until the operated ends heal the colon has to be given rest and hence a colostomy pouch is attached to collect all the waste materials directly.
A colostomy (bag) is attached by making a slit in the abdominal area. The intestines are then taken out through the skin of the patient and these intestines are sutured to the skin and the process is over.
one thing what a patient has to be careful is to keep the pouch clean and tidy without getting any sorts of infection.
The base area where the pouch is resting that is the portion of the abdomen has to be cleaned with utmost care.
