Who am I? That is a secret I'd never tell.
xoxo, Gossip Girl
These lines hooked me, I must say. There are those who would believe that having voice-overs on shows were tacky but the initial success of shows like Sex and the City had those moments when the main character, Carrie, talked to herself and emphasized the important concept of a certain episode. So for me, there is a certain flair in the use of voice-overs.
Having said that the idea of bringing together the upper elite and the intellectually elite was a nice touch to Gossip Girl since it is usually an angle that is not used for shows. It is often the rich girl new guy or rich kid-poor and troubled kid angle. The fact that Dan is very put together and is regular would actually make viewers think that they too, Mr. and Ms. Regular can snag the "It" person in the circle they can't seem to fit into, and pretend to not want to be in.
What fascinates me about the whole series is not the entangled relationships and broken hearts that pave the Upper east side and Brooklyn but the idea of little J starting out as a wannabe into a quasi-queen bee to social climber expose.
Most girls can relate to her despite the fact they would rarely admit to that fact. She is very artistic and she can be popular had she not been in a world that only cared about labels. She can make beautiful things that can gain the respect of others but she had to pretend to love someone just to get into the inner circle. Unfortunately her best laid plans were destroyed by the minor detail that her boyfriend was Serena's quasi-boyfriend.
As for the men, I know they love Chuck Bass as much as they hate him for being the personification of that guy who took their girlfriend away. Always the other guy may be more suave than they are, sleeker and worldlier. While the real-time Chucks wonder how the Nates and the Dans always end up with the girl.
I had seen O.C. and had actually liked it in the beginning but as the complications of the story became almost atypical, I had stopped watching the show. I was actually a little disappointed because the first season ended in an off-tune for me but the return of the GG group is making me both anxious and oddly hopeful.
There is sure to be a lot of stories that I can follow from my personal favorite, Chuck Bass. Feeling almost a kindred spirit to the perennial playboy who is afraid of change enough to give up love is a flame I am more than willing to feed.
To those who think that the characters have their own world, I askdidn't you feel you were the center of the universe when you were their age?
You know you loved those days too.
