Children with writing difficulties feel very frustrated and Parents are very often at a major loss to understand the problem. There are times when this problem is not understood by the school or teachers either. Everyone is struggling to swim against the tide of ignorance up until the student is, maybe twelve or older. Then the school will inform you that your child has a problem. However, a solution is not always put forward by either the teacher or school.
The student and parents have to go through such amount of uncertainty. It is only with a bit of luck for the student who has parents with an attitude of we can overcome this difficulty' that there can be a reasonable outcome. Over these early years the student who is aware of his/her difficulty will often ask what is wrong with me'. They work hard, as we say in our part of the world they are hard grafters'. They are also very ambitious and are in all other ways very bright.
Our Son is a fantastic example of this problem. I say fantastic, because from early on in his school years he recognised he had a problem, even before we could get our heads around his difficulties. The school programme included a number of words that the students had to learn to spell each week. They were tested every Friday and our Son often came home weeping his results were never any more than, one or two out of the ten words spelt correctly. He would look for reassurance from us that he knew how to spell all the words. After all, he had spent time learning how to spell them and he could spell them, only we never asked him to write them down. Then the penny dropped he can't write them, only spell them. So what was the problem he is dyslexic.
For any parent who is reading this - I SAY DO NOT WORRY if your child is able to keep up with everything else I SAY DO NOT WORRY.
The most important thing for your child is that you repeat over and over again how well he/she is doing so well in the subjects that do not present a problem for them. Remind them that spelling and being able to put it all on paper correctly is not the most important thing in life.
This is a conversation I had with my Son one day Parents, take note (we always helped him to stay confident in his own abilities- we told him nothing you want to do is impossible')
This is the conversation
Our Son said I will be a writer when I grow up'.
When I replied, but what about spelling'
He said, I will employ a Secretary.
I then asked how would know if he/she can spell properly'
He said,
