Short stories: Loneliness

by Joey Wonder

Created on: August 05, 2008

She lived in the big city. She had a small studio apartment and she walked to work everyday. She had a job she hated and had to dress in a suit. She drank too much every weekend and was depressed all day. She was lonely surrounded by millions of people.

Everyday she would wake up late at 7:45 and rush around her apartment getting ready for work. She dropped things repeatedly because she was so tired. She never slept well and stayed up late into the night eating bad-for-you snack foods from the vending machine in the basement laundry room. She would rarely get to sleep before 1:00 AM and she would listen to music through her wireless headphones, shouting out the words along with the sad and angry songs, not making any noise. She would arrive 2 minutes late to work every day. Sit down at her desk and wish that it would be time to go home so that she could cry on the floor. She diligently did her work and always volunteered for more work because she worked very quickly. At work they didn't know just how miserable she was because she kept up a false exterior of happiness.

Her miserable sort of a "boyfriend" worked at the same company as her. She followed him around like a lost dog. Everyone "knew" that they were together, but she hoped they actually would really be together. He would only go out with her on Friday nights and then would only spend 6 hours on that night with her. They would go back to her apartment have sex and then he would take his 11:40 train back to the suburbs where he lived. He never stayed at her apartment and he would never let her stay at his house.

She finally got up the nerve to leave the company where they worked together. She had worried herself so bad that
