your car. As you approach a stop, take your foot of the gas and let your momentum carry you. Then gently press the brake pedal to stop. You'll save not only gas but also your brake pads.
DON'T OVER ACCELERATE. When you take off from a standing start on a bike do you pedal as hard as you can until you reach your cruising velocity? No. You start out slowly and use a reasonable amount of force to get up to speed. This conserves energy. When driving your car, start out slowly and accelerate moderately and you'll increase your mileage.
UP SHIFT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. As you pick up speed riding a bike, you can use less energy by shifting into higher gears rather than staying in a low gear and pedaling faster and faster. The same is true for your car. If you have a stick shift, do not stay in a lower gear until the engine over revs. Rather, up shift as soon as you've reached a speed where the engine can handle the next higher gear. If you have an automatic, reduce the pressure on the gas pedal. This will allow the transmissions to up shift sooner. Up shifting as soon as feasible will increase gas mileage.
TURN OFF WHAT YOU DON'T NEED. Just as every appliance you operate at home adds to your energy bill, so does every accessory in your car. Air conditioning is the biggest offender, but things like extra lights (fog lights, driving lights, etc.) use energy from your alternator, which in turn places more load on your engine. More load on the engine uses more gas. Turn off whatever you can do without.
Some cars get better mileage than others, but if you follow the tips above you'll get the highest mileage available for your particular vehicle.
