How to Increase Gas Mileage.
There are two ways to increase your gas mileage. The first is to alter your driving habits in such a way as to increase your fuel efficiency. The second is to alter the vehicle itself to make it consume less. Let's begin with ways to alter your vehicle.
The best advice I can give you is probably the same as you have already heard from other information sources regarding gas mileage. Keep your vehicle tuned up, keep your tires properly inflated, use your air-conditioning sparingly, and remove any cargo that you do not need on the road with you. (I know, you've heard it all before.)
There is a website however, that discusses several less known ways to increase gas mileage. The web address is listed as a source at the end of this article. If you are a do-it-yourselfer, it explains a couple of simple modifications you can perform to save gas. Each one makes the engine computer think the fuel mixture is too rich. It, in turn, injects less fuel into the engine. I don't know if they work on every vehicle, but they worked on mine. There are also some good suggestions that can benefit any car owner.
Let's move on to altering your driving habits.
The best way to get into the frame of mind for saving gas is to think of yourself riding a bicycle. When it's your own body supplying the power most of us have a tendency to conserve energy. The less energy you use on a bike the more you have left in your body. The less energy you use in your vehicle the more gas you keep in your tank. Here are several tips to squeeze the most amount of work out of each precious drop of gasoline.
DON'T SPEED. When riding a bike, the faster you ride the more energy you must use to cover a given distance. This is due mostly to wind resistance. The more slowly you move through the air the easier it is to displace. When driving, you have to share the road with others, and you have to drive fast enough not to be a traffic hazard, but try to drive a couple miles an hour slower than average instead of faster. Each mile an hour slower will translate into higher gas mileage.
DON'T ACCELERATE TOWARD A STOP. When you ride a bike and see you'll have to stop soon do you keep pedaling as fast as you can until you have to slam on the brakes? (If so, I have the name of a good psychiatrist.) Of course not. You stop pedaling and let your momentum carry you forward until you gently apply the brakes to stop. This saves energy. The same is true for
