I want to write an article on Brett Favre. No I don't, I've changed my mind. Wait a minute, I'm sorry, I do want to write this article after all! I understand someone changing their mind concerning a big decision such as retirment, but who has as much wiggle room as the pro athlete? If I retire from my job I can't go back, can you? Oh well, beside the point. The issue for me is the perception Brett Favre has given to fans over the years. So many of us looked upon him as a breath of fresh air. Compared to the likes of Owens and Moss, and others like them, Favre is the kind of guy we fans can feel good about. Or he was until now. I'm afraid Brett has done much damage to that perception. He's coming off as just another spoiled and demanding pro athlete who insists on having his way. He is known after all for his boylike enthusiasm for the game, and boys can be stubborn right? I have always liked Favre, and felt he deserved the success he enjoyed over the years, he certainly helped turn the Packers around. When he retired I thought he was doing it the right way; why wait until you are relegated to bench duty before getting out? But here he is after calling it quits, and leaving with the respect of millions of fans, as well as many of the other players in the NFL, saying he wants to come back. It's just too soon, he hasn't even missed a season yet, hasn't had to sit at home and watch his former teammates compete without him. That leads me to believe there is more to the story than Brett simply "missing" the game. He is killing the image and respect he worked so hard for for so many years to obtain. It seems as if none of that matters to him as long as he gets his way. A spoiled child would conduct himself in much the same way as Brett is doing, and it pains me as a fan to see one of the best quarterbacks in history do this to his legacy. I lived in Wisconsin for a while and I observed first hand the "Packer Pride" of the football fans up there. And Brett, he's a Saint to those people no question. I suppose I expected Brett would be the kind of guy who cared what the fans thought, but I must admit I was wrong. But why should he care? We're just the dolts who sit in the stands, hooping and hollering as we try to forget the rat-race we'll face on Monday morning. With that thought in mind why should I care what Brett Favre does? I don't. Well maybe I do. No, I don't. Well maybe...
