Tips on how to be productive in a stressful work environment

Stress on the job is a major problem for employees and the companies they work for. Stress can be caused by the job itself or from issues with your boss and colleagues. Before considering a leave from work, see Tammy's Ten for ways to cope.

1. Have a positive attitude. The power of suggestion is stronger than you think and changing your outlook can make a real difference. You don't have to wear a permanent smile, but you should try to see the glass half full.

2. Focus on the big picture. Don't sweat the small stuff is still a good motto. Being a perfectionist makes life more stressful. Try to ignore the minor setbacks and focus your attention where it really matters.

3. Ask for help. If you are unclear of your duties ask someone for help. Your boss and your coworkers may be glad you asked. It's usually easier to re-explain a task than correct an error that happens. If they are unhelpful, you are no worse off.

4. Don't procrastinate. It's easy to put off a stressful task and tackle that to-do list later. Do your job one day at a time. This will make you feel better prepared and lower your overall anxiety at work.

5. Let it out. You don't want to be the office complainer, but it's unhealthy to keep your emotions inside. Talking to a fellow colleague can be a great way to relive your stress. They are likely to understand your frustrations and may be going through a similar situation.

6. Take your breaks. Some days you may need to work through your lunch, but don't make it a regular habit. Taking the time to relax and enjoy your breaks can help you focus on daily tasks. Going for a walk, dining out for lunch or reading a book can help you de-stress.

7. Keep a journal. Instead of freaking out on your boss, write your frustrations down on paper. It can make you see the situation differently and give you the time you need to relax.

8. Learn relaxation breathing. It really does help to make you feel better and it's not a complicated activity. You can do it any time of day just sitting at your desk.

9. Utilize comfort items. If you have a space to call your own, bring your favorite things to work. Try a fan, radio, family pictures or your favorite herbal tea. Just having your comfort items around can be a stress reliever.

10. Learn confidence. Take a few hints from family and friends or attend a confidence class or workshop. Feeling you lack control in your life can be a major stressor. Standing up for yourself is an important skill and takes a lot of practice.

If you still can't cope after trying these tips, you may need to consider changing your job. Try a new position within your company or even re-train for a new career. Everyone needs to pay their dues, but shouldn't work forever in a job they can't stand. Good luck!
