cold pool at St. Nino. It was wonderful and refreshing. However, to the Filipinos, it actually was too cold and the only people who spent more than a minute or two in the pool were myself and some American soldiers who were visiting Camiguin as well.
We also ran into the soldiers, as well as a Filipino General and his entourage at the Sunken Cemetery, a grave yard that was completely flooded a century ago. A fifty foot cross, with a platform for visitors to dock and walk around was erected in the water to mark and honor all those buried there. It is quite stirring.
We then had a wonderful meal at a local open air restaurant where you can catch your own fish and have them cook it. You can also ask them to do the work of reeling in your lunch if you so desire.
That entire adventure on Camiguin and the surrounding islands cost eleven people little more than three hundred dollars and it is something I and my family will never forget.
The Philippines is made up of over seven thousand islands and I have not yet seen a dozen of them. But the consistent themes of those I have visited are beautiful scenery, tropical climates, incredibly affordable prices, and the most hospitable people I have ever encountered. When you go to the Philippines, you can expect to hold on to the majority of cash you bring and to never carry a bag. The locals just will not allow it. They will fall over themselves to make you feel at home. And they will do it with a smile.
Visiting the Philippines is not just the best vacation spot you've never considered. It is not just a tropical paradise you can enjoy for pennies on the dollar. It is a life-changing destination. It certainly was for me... and not just because I married a Filipina.
