Inappropriate names for children

by J. Hoff

A little while ago there was the story about the little girl in New Zealand who was named Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii. I don't know what the parents were thinking, but it makes the character in the Johnny Cash song A Boy Named Sue appear lucky in comparison.

The article also mentioned several other names, including Number 16 Bus Shelter. Another person was named Violence, and my first impression of that name is that I do not want to meet that person. However, I wouldn't want to meet Wolf Blitzer either if I only knew his name and he's as tame as a cat.

Talking of celebrities, there was a famous Norwegian named Bjrnstjerne Bjrnson. If I am not missing the meaning completely, it basically translates to Bearstar Bearson. It's a funny name and it probably helped him at getting famous.

Of course the latter two doesn't really compare to Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii or Number 16 Bus Shelter. However, even normal names can sometimes be unfortunate. Take a name like Dick. It doesn't always work, and I'm sure the Dick's with last names Wood and Stillhard came to realize that. I wonder what their parents were thinking. Dick Stillhard, that sounds good! Dick Butkiss is not much better, however, and the worst is probably Dick Heads. Either that guy's parents had good humor or they just didn't think about his last name. I can almost guarantee that there are many Dicks out there who are are not completely satisfied and Dick B. Long may be one of them!

Dick is not only a first name, and the observant parent would see that Richard Dick does not read all that good on paper. Someone obviously missed that and I suppose Richard heard the jokes enough times by now. And of course, Dick Cheney is really Richard Dick Cheney. No wonder he went that way.

There are other unfortunate people though. When your last name is Bush, you might stick away from Harry as the first name. There was at least one pair of parents who thought Harry Bush was a nice name, and they went with that. I hope Harry Bush was happy with his name!

Cass is another last name you need to be careful with. Even if Jack is a popular name, Jack Cass reminds me a little of a TV show, and I can almost hear the other student saying I was really just saying his name... Jack Cass!

If your name is Pot and you want a lucky child, you could go along with Jack. There is at least one Jack Pot out there and he sure has a winning name. Ima Gay is another name that is very descriptive, and I hope it worked out for that person. Pat is another classic name but honestly the parents of Pat Myass and Pat Mycock could've picked better names for their respective sons. Up is not a last name I've never seen before, but maybe Phylis wasn't the best name. Dick too could be a bad first name pick.

Foreigners occasionally have names that do not blend well with the English language. Ivana Sukalot is such a name. Maybe her name made her popular among English-speaking males, however! Another foreign name that may not work as good is Lu Zer. It sounds a little sad, but let's hope Lu Zer did good anyway!
