THE REALITY OF POWER

When most people think and speak of power, it means political, social or economic clout. Although Webster defines power as "a capacity for action, physical, mental, or moral, energy, might; agency or motive force; authority; one in authority; influence or ascendancy" - for most of us, living in this very materialistic society, we have diminished the meaning of power to the position of who controls the most and/or who has the most toys.

The reality of true power is that it is a very personal thing. True power is based in the spiritual. Unfortunately, most of us have been raised to see spiritual power as being something outside of us, as being a force that can bless of curse us. In reality, this spiritual power is a force that moves and expresses itself through us.

Possessing this personal power requires a commitment to the self. It requires a turning inward and discovering who we are and how we are affected by the energies of those around us. This deeper truth of who we really are requires awareness. This begins by listening to your inner dialogue when you are alone and then being aware of how this changes when you are around other people.

A big part of personal power is leaving behind the right-wrong judgments. When you leave judgments behind you, you free yourself from being affected by other people's energy. This also involves forgiveness. This requires an awareness of any resentments you have had or still have towards others, any feelings of superiority or inferiority, grudges, or any other negative thoughts or pictures you may have sent in their direction. This is a very important step because every time you replay a negative memory, you are creating it again in the future.

The judgments we place on other people, and other people place on us, along with other expectations we have for each other, end up creating disappointment and pain. When we believe that another has caused us pain and unhappiness, we become separated from that person. This often puts us into a power struggle with each other. Someone has to take the blame here, so we think. Each person usually feels they are right and that the other person is unjustified in their approach. If we can leave the right-wrong judgments behind, we give ourselves the opportunity to see the other person's point of view and not feel we have to prove anything.

Every person and event that presents itself to you, gives you the opportunity to clean up your energy, evolve yourself, and achieve higher
